FOCUS GROUPS

This is an intensive 2-day workshop designed to help you get the most out of focus groups

Day 1: Designing focus group studies and generating data using focus groups

Day 2: Analysing and presenting focus group research

Focus groups have been widely used - both in applied contexts and to explore disciplinary and theoretical concerns. This has led to an unhelpful distinction being made between these different usages. This workshop seeks to bridge this gap, by showing how paying attention to research design and in-depth analysis can pay dividends, whichever end of the spectrum is involved. It will guide participants through the challenges posed by purposive sampling, development of topic guides, selection of stimulus materials and data generation, emphasising the value of taking a thoughtful and thorough approach. The potential of 'grounded theory'-based approaches - including thematic coding, returning to the field and carrying out second-stage sampling will be explored. The workshop will also illustrate how some of the 'tools' of conversation and discourse analysis can be brought to bear on making sense of data generated in a more 'applied' context.

Participants will have the opportunity to carry out group exercises on sampling, generating data, developing a provisional coding frame, coding transcripts and refining a coding frame. The virtual topic will be 'Views about weight management'.
