ANALYZING QUALITATIVE DATA
This is an intensive 2-day workshop that looks at identifying and interrogating patterning and using theory in qualitative data analysis. It explores the rich but potentially daunting amounts of data that can be generated by research. It aims to guide novice qualitative researchers through the sometimes confusing array of advice, approaches and choices that are offered, seeking to de-mystify the process by allowing participants to engage in hands-on exercises which illustrate the process of interrogating data and developing and refining explanations.
Day 1: Identifying and interrogating patterning
The first day introduces the principles underpinning qualitative data analysis and outlines the similarities and differences involved in the range of approaches to analysing qualitative data that characterize the main qualitative traditions. Taking thematic coding as its starting point the workshop will equip participants to step beyond coding of data to develop and refine explanatory frameworks. It emphasises the importance of interrogating patterning in data and seeking to explain ssimilarities and differences identified.
Participants will have access to condensed dataset derived from an interview study of couples' experiences of sub-fertility. Small group work will provide an opportunity to further develop and refine a provisional coding frame and to carry out a 'frames and grids' exercise to identify and interrogate patterning, drawing on pre-coded data excerpts.
Day 2: Using theory in qualitative data analysis
Picking up from here day 2 concentrates on harnessing theory in qualitative data analysis. It will examine some of the common pitfalls and challenges associated with attempts to utilize theory to inform data analysis. Whilst acknowledging the central role played by specific disciplinary concerns and theoretical persuasions, it will provide some overarching hints and analytical tools that can be employed to address a wider range of theoretical frameworks. It will provide concrete experience of the use of theoretical frameworks to interrogate data and the use of data to interrogate and refine theories.
Participants will interrogate a selection of pre-coded data excerpts from an interview study of couples' experiences of sub-fertility (the same study showcased on day 1, but using a wider selection of data excerpts). They will gain experience in applying the 'constant comparative method' in using data to interrogate and refine the theoretical framework of 'biographical disruption', drawing on a number of published papers which utilize and critique this framework
